Shortly before
Grandpa died, David and Beth took
Grandma to look at a litter of
puppies, hoping that she might find
some comfort in the company of a new
puppy. Well, the trip was a
success! Grandma fell in love with
a cute little ball of multi-colored
fur and named her Cutie Pie. David
and Beth fell in love, at the same
time, with Cutie Pie’s sister whom
they named Tiffany. Both went home
as happy as could be – David and
Beth to Columbus, Ohio and Grandma
to Belmont, Ohio about three hours
from David and Beth.
Cutie Pie led a
very quiet, sedentary life with
Grandma while Tiffany led a very
active one with David, Beth, and
their children. Because of strong
family love, David and Beth
frequently asked Grandma and Cutie
Pie to visit them for a week or so.
This was quite a gala event for
Cutie Pie and Tiffany. Cutie Pie
would lie quietly in the car until
she was a few miles from Tiffany and
then, like she knew where she was,
she would stand up, start looking
out the window and shivering with
excitement. The minute the car door
opened, Cutie Pie was out to greet
Tiffany who was waiting anxiously.
They’d race around the house playing
with each other in pure ecstasy,
always together for the whole week.
As years passed
they became a little less playful,
but always exhibited a strong love
for each other. It appeared to us
that they communicated in some way
to each other about the kind of life
each led. Tiffany tried to add a
little excitement to Cutie Pie’s
quiet life. Tiffany knew she was
the “boss” in her own home and made
it very clear to other visiting dogs
that they could not eat or drink
from her bowls and could not lie in
her bed. Cutie Pie was given
complete freedom by Tiffany to do
anything. Cutie Pie, however,
seemed to respect Tiffany by
following the same rules as the
other dogs. One day, however, Cutie
Pie very gently and slowly climbed
into Tiffany’s bed and laid her head
down on the soft side of it.
Tiffany stood observing what was
happening without uttering a sound.
She then ran and got one of her
favorite blankets; laid it along
side the bed, worked to make it
comfortable, then laid down and
lovingly put her head next to Cutie
Pie’s. The strong sisterly lovethey exhibited brought tears
to our eyes.
